It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Horatio Spafford penned these lyrics on the site where his wife and children perished at sea. As he paused there remembering all that he had lost, I’m sure he must have choked up at the enormity of his loss and the depth of his pain. And yet, his legacy is that he chose to speak hope. What a powerful testimony.

It is well.

My first foray into watercolour (amid many great intentions, of course), this piece of art is one that I put my hand to at a retreat I attended last year.

The moment I removed the washi tape to reveal the crisp white border, it felt finished. Up until then, I wasn’t entirely happy with it. The final result honestly surprised me. (It just goes to show that it’s always worth persisting!)

As you know, words are important to me. I decided to incorporate the chorus line from the well-known hymn, “It is well with my soul.” Yet as I painted the letters, I found that just the three words were enough.

It is well.

A reminder that, no matter what, we can hope. That no matter what, we are held. That storms and swirling oceans can sway our attention, but when we rest our trust in God’s promises, we can choose to live out the words, “it is well.”

It is well.
